SPACE SUIT

Space suits are required for astronauts to survive in space by protecting from dangers of space. Space Suits cost about $ 12 million (90 crore rupees).

• Due to space being a vacuum, the suits are required to have oxygen.

• Oxygen is stored in tanks allowing astronauts to work outside spacecraft for 6 to 8.5 hours.

• Space suit also have water supply bags (620 to 950ml), so astronauts do not suffer dehydration.

• The space suit is made from several layers of material and there is a tubing all around which is filled with chilled water to help cool the suit. The suit is also insulated so the astronauts does not become too cold. The several layers also protect astronauts from harmful space radiations, space dust which can travel faster than a bullet.

• The visors on the suit helmets are made with a special gold lines which protects the eyes of the astronauts from sunlight.

How long Can You Survive In Outer Space Without An Oxygen Mask?

The minimum concentration/partial pressure of oxygen that can be tolerated is 16 KPa(kilo pascal). But below this astronauts are at risk of becoming unconscious and dying from hypoxia. As gaseous exchange occur by diffusion from high partial pressure towards low partial pressure. So in vacuum of Space though gas exchange in lungs continuous as normal but it results in the removal of all gases, including oxygen, from the bloodstream. In about 9 to 12 seconds, the deoxygenated blood reaches the brain results in the loss of consciousness and death would gradually follow after 2 minutes of exposure.

Advantages Of A Space Suit:

Formation of gas bubbles in body fluids due to reduce environmental pressure at high altitude is known as Ebullism.

• liquids reaches to their boiling point even at lower temperature when the pressure on them is lowered.

• in space as pressure is very low so blood begin to boil and double as steam.

• steam plot the body to twice its normal size and slow the

• but issues are elastic and porous enough to prevent rupture.

Flight suit, the elastic garment called a crew altitude protection suit (CAPS) that use 20KPa (kilo Pascal) of pure oxygen to prevent Ebullism, but simple evaporation of blood or gases dissolved in blood can still cause decompression sickness is not managed. Rapid decompression can be much more dangerous than vacuum exposure venting through the windpipe may be too slow to prevent rupture of delicate alveoli of lungs, but eardrums maybe ruptured by rapid decompression barotrauma.

The space suit protects the Astronauts from all these harmful effects of Microgravity.
